You know, looking at Scoots' post gives me another idea...
Short or long? Fast or slow? Simple or complex?
Me, I'm a short/fast/complex guy.

There is also the question of "Does it have to just be on drums to be fast?" and while I'll say no, people playing guitars as fast as they can just sounds like a homo wankfest. I think the only thing that doesn't necessarily determine the speed of the song is the vocals. Everything else needs to be working together to make a fast song. And talking about homo wankfests, you should check out a Michael Angelo instruction vid if you ever get the chance. He's probably one of the best shredders around, but when he's just playing by himself it's some of the most obnoxious shit you'll ever hear. Then again, I'm not much of a guitar player so I'm not nearly as appreciative of his ability as somebody like Skin Splitter or Uncle Meat.

I'm a guitar player and I find shredding to be pretty unnecessary. Yngwie Malmsteen, Rusty Cooley, Steve Vai...you guys can all suck it.

I prefer speed over length, but it depends on what I'm listening to. Punk and grind are easiest to digest in minute-long chunks, while death metal and thrash can easily hold up much longer. Simplicity and complexity don't hold nearly as much weight with me as the ability to write a good song. Orff was a brilliant composer, but not in a million years could he have written "Eat Y'Self Fitter".

i "grew up" listening to everything under the sun, but least of all, metal, thrash, punk. when i was first introduced to the hardcore scene it was in the mid 90's when bands like strife, snapcase, integrity were big. i remember the first time i heard "good intentions" off of start today by GB... i could not believe a person was capable of singing so fast. now, my musical tastes include classic rock, metal, thrash, grind, hardcore, reggae, hiphop, and sometimes even some... *gulp*... indy rock. now, throw all that out and consider the fact that this website is based on the "fast" end of the big-picture musical spectrum. nothing here is compared to reggae, or hip hop, or indy rock. if we were comparing the slayer-esque sound to those genres, i'd say sure, its fast as shit. but i just would not describe a band with that slayer kind of sound as a "fast" band to people involved in metal/thrash/hardcore, because they do not fall into the faster end of that particular spectrum. they are more in the middle.
EDIT: slayer, and bands like that are certainly capable of throwing down a song that would thrash as good as anyone else... but im talking about a general sound.
