Is it just me, or does anyone else get the impression that bands writing political lyrics are completely wasting their time? I mean, it's cool if you like to go to protests or get involved with activism and that shit, but in your songs...who fucking cares? Who's going to let some songs dictate their political beliefs anyway? To me it's all just a matter of bands taking themselves too seriously, which is kind of lame. Some of my favorite bands write political lyrics, but the times I feel empowered by them are when bands write about something that people can actually, you know, relate to. Serious messages and songs just don't seem to mix too well in my opinion.
Anyway, this is kind of a bland rant so if someone wants to add to it or just flat out disagree, feel free.

It's almost expected for a band to sing about politics or religeon. I find it pretty dull material, especially since it's commonplace to find a band only a casual follower of the subject they preach.
"Yeah, Christianity and George W. Bush oppress me!" "Why?" "Uh...because I watch Roger Moore films and Penn & Teller's Bullshit when I can. Drink a beer!"

Dropdead's lyrics are almost 100% political, and look at their success? Obviously they connected with people, and I'm sure inspired a big percent of them to change their beliefs, or at least enlightened them, in one way or another.

Personally, I detest when musicians preach to me. If I wanted to get yelled at about how things in the world suck, I'd go to Mass on sundays. I did not want to either spend $20 on a CD or waste valuable bandwidth downloading their music, just to have some unintelligent poopoo head tell me about how things suck. If things suck, then get up off your ass and help fix them!

Yeah, just to clarify, I personally don't often prefer to listen to super political stuff. I was just trying to say that sometimes, it's an image that works, well.

honestly, i don't think anyone "gets" all their political stances from music, but i'm sure lots of people have become aware of things/thought about other shit they normally wouldn't have and really that is the point.

By the way, the "nobody cares about your politics" thing goes double if you are a Nazi or Hare Krishna band.

Here's how it goes...most people that get anything out of the lyrics only do so because they take interest in the subject matter in the first place. I can't think of how many lyrics have been written around Satan, killing somebody, raping something, etc. None of that shit I care about, but a practicing Satanist would probably find some of those lyrics enlightening. Somebody who reads books about serial killers might find Carcass lyrics fasinating. All depends on who's listening to it.
Personally, I only tend to like lyrics centered around dark humor or war. I have nothing against political bands, but I really don't give a flying fuck what they have to say and learn nothing from their message.

Politics is not fun, music is fun. Combining the two of them is like mixing ice cream and motor oil.
Give me cliche "angry over stupid little things" lyrics any day.

You would think if the message was that important to a band, they wouldn't resort to screaming/growling it.
"Here's a song we wrote about how the oil companies are controlling our economy through our dependence of luxury and destroying the envirnment at the same time, potentially killing any hopes our future generations have of seeing a smog-free sun set. One two three four! Waaaarrrrggghhhh!!! Bar-or-war-or-waaaaaaggghhhhh! Rrrrrroooooaaaaauuuugggghhhhh!!! Unf unf ggggaaaaaaaa!!!!!"
Amazing. I got so much out of your message, dude.

My last comment was blatantly ignorant, but I'm serious about only attracting like minds through one's lyrics. This isn't to say that somebody can't appreciate a lyric they do not associate with, but I find it very hard to believe that somebody will listen to an Earth Crisis record and suddenly take interest in becoming straight edge without already having an interest.
In all the music I've ever heard, nothing has ever been written in a song which has enlightened me to a subject I already did not take interest in.

Well I agree and disagree... I'd prefer overall a positive message than a negative one. I'm not a religious person at all, but I'd rather hear christian lyrics geared in a positive manner than some satanic ramblings, or descriptions of various surgical procedures. On the other side, I'd rather listen to hardcore about beating someone down than someone crying that their girlfriend left them.
As for politics itself... SOAD is a very political band, and they succeed in writing emotional songs that reach the mainstream. Does it change me views? No, but it does make me aware of what others may feed.
