If by doom you mean "one guitar stroke every 30 seconds, 10 minute songs, and drum beats that your grandma could play" then put me on the list of dislikers. That seems to be how doom is categorized here.

stuff i like: sabbath (obv), pentagram, sleep, witchcraft, st vitus
not into: more of the "stoner" oriented bands, such as electric wizard, orange goblin, etc

I dig it all. At first I didn't really like the ultra-slow doom style, but over time it grew on me. I find it completely relaxing to listen to, and attractive in the sense it has these sludgy, crushing overtones. I don't find it terribly appealing during the morning/afternoon when I'm full of energy, but in the evening when the sun goes down and I don't have the brain power to decipher 500 bpm technical music I find some nice, slow doom plays well.
And not to hi-jack the thread, but I'd consider Orange Goblin straight-up stoner with some Sabbath elements more than stoner oriented doom. It's debatable, I suppose.

I'm only just now wading into Doom, I've been listening to a hell of a lot of Katatonia lately. However, I do prefer their newer stuff, which I'm not sure would be strictly classified as Doom Metal (in fact, I think they've labeled themselves 'dark rock').

That seems to be how doom is categorized here. well the same patern only done faster would still suck nonetheless. But newer doom bands incorporate progression in their song structure so even if its mid tempo, dynamics keep changing every now and then. So far Doom IVe been listening to lately Swallow the Sun My Dying Bride Novembers Doom

I've got Brave Murder Day, Discouraged Ones, Last Fair Deal Gone Down and Viva Emptiness (and I just acquired a promo version of The Great Cold Distance - voice over appears twice on each track, but I don't mind, I'm digging the album). I definitely prefer their Dark Rock stuff. In terms of actual Doom, I've pretty much only listened to a few tracks from My Dying Bride's The Dreadful Hours, I like what I've heard.

I caught Orange Goblin live at the Double Door in Chicago, and they actually had a tempo faster than a whale's heartbeat. Live, they were definately upbeat (in tempo, not message).
