It's Official: New METALLICA Album To Be Produced By RICK RUBIN - Feb. 16, 2006 As BLABBERMOUTH.NET first hinted on Jan. 6 and then again on Jan. 27, METALLICA have finally confirmed that they are working with producer Rick Rubin (SYSTEM OF A DOWN, AUDIOSLAVE, SLAYER, SLIPKNOT) on their new studio album.
In a posting on their official web site, METALLICA write, "We just wanted to let our friends know that we have been jamming, writing, just plain messing around and having fun in the studio for the last few weeks.
"Oh, and by the way, this up-and-coming producer guy named Rick something-or-other has been coming by the studio every now and again to listen to some of our new stuff and throw his two/three cents in.
"Since this Rick dude is new to all of this, we thought it would be a nice gesture to help break him into the music business by asking him to produce our next record. We're very happy he said yes! In other words, we are psyched to share with you that Rick Rubin is producing the next METALLICA album! FUCK YEAH!"
Check out pictures of METALLICA and Rick Rubin in the band's rehearsal/recording studio at Metallica.com.
It was as far back as last October that the first rumblings of a METALLICA/Rubin collaboration reached BLABBERMOUTH.NET, and the rumors have been gaining strength ever since. Adding fuel to these reports was the fact that longtime METALLICA producer Bob Rock is scheduled to spend a good portion of 2006 working on the new CD from MÖTLEY CRÜE, which is expected to surface sometime next year.
In a September 2005 interview with the METALLICA fan club magazine So What!, METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich was asked point-blank if Bob Rock's name had been discused for the group's next album.
"I would say that Bob Rock will always be our producer," Ulrich replied. "You know it's almost like default. It's not whether he should produce, it's more whether he shouldn't produce it. So I would expect Bob Rock to produce it unless he's not interested."
In the same interview, Ulrich spoke highly of the most recent albums by SLIPKNOT and SYSTEM OF A DOWN — both of which were produced by Rubin — citing them as particularly inspiring in terms of making him "look forward to paying a little more attention to the sonics" next time around.
METALLICA officially began the songwriting process for their new album late last year and are expected to spend the next few months compiling ideas before entering the final recording stage. A late 2006/early 2007 release via Warner Bros. is expected.
Discuss?!?!

Rick Rubin is new to the recording industry? I've heard that guy's name quite a few times.

Makes you wonder why they sacked Bob Rock.
Other than the fact that they probably figured he was making too much of their money and made him realize that no one controls Metallica. Grrr.

just plain messing around and having fun in the studio for the last few weeks. Translation: Throwing bucketfuls of hundred dollar bills in the air and taking turns running through them naked.

Eh, I don't know. One of my guilty pleasures was that I always liked Metallica (I only liked Some Kind of Monster, Sweet Amber, and The Unnamed Feeling off of St. Anger) but nothing for me as ever matched the first listening of And Justice. If they deliver an album as bad as St. Anger, I have officially given up on them.

Rick Rubin rules. I want his fur coat and beard.
Now, I fucking hate Metallica, but lately I've been hearing their early shit and thinking, "my God, this fucking rocks." Kill'em All and Master of Puppets and whatnot. Plus they covered a bunch of Diamond Head songs and didn't screw them up.
There's no way at this point, though, with their inflated egos and pussy sensibilities and commercial ambitions, that even Rick Rubin can ever make them good again.

It wont be Rubin that will make them good, it'll have to be themselves.
*Sigh*. It's possible to go back to what you once did, Exodus proved it.
I hope Metallica will come up big with this next one.

With Exodus they only had one really bad album in Force Of Habit before before calling it quits and actually writing something worth listening to well over a decade later. With Force Of Habit, they were actually trying to come up with good material, and with the exception of "Me, Myself, & I", failed miserably.
Metallica has a new legion of fans, and has been playing their new style of music far longer than their "glory days" of thrash ('83 - '88 vs. '91 - '03). The best one could hope for is a minor nod to their old days since aggressive music is becoming increasingly popular on the radio. The chance of them writing something as good as Kill 'Em All are practically nil, and should they abandon their current sound again they're probably going to have to suffer through even more, "They sold out" banter and probably stuff like, "The only reason they're incorporating thrash into their music again is because they know it's trendy again and just want to sell records".
Whatever. If they write just one song like good as "Whiplash" or "Creeping Death" then I'll probably buy it.

And then you'll get depressed because of the other crap that overloads the album. You'll realize that you just gave money to some complete cocks, and have to download a crapload of music to offset your guilt. You'll get spotted by a monitor of the ASCAP Secret Police, they'll surround your house with the local SWAT team, and you and your family will have to flee to some country without an extradition treaty (after you leave thirty or so corpses after a three hour gun battle).
So do you and your family a favor, don't support Metallica.

You know what, I actually liked St. Anger. It was one of those albums that you have to listen to over and over again to really grasp where it's going.
And after Load and Reload, it was certainly a step in the right direction.

METALLICA To Spend Six Months Writing Before Commencing Recording Process - Mar. 10, 2006 RollingStone.com is reporting that METALLICA have hunkered down in a San Francisco studio, breaking ground on their ninth studio disc, with producer Rick Rubin (SYSTEM OF A DOWN, AUDIOSLAVE, SLAYER). After opening two shows for the ROLLING STONES last November, 'TALLICA got the itch to stitch together a new album. "We've been writing, jamming, hanging for about two months," drummer Lars Ulrich tells RollingStone.com. "Right now it's me, James [Hetfield] and Rob [Trujillo] — Kirk [Hammett] shows up once in a while." On their last album, "St. Anger", the band wrote and recorded simultaneously; this time, they'll first spend about six months composing brain-rattling riffs and mining recordings of pre-show jams from the "St. Anger" tour for material. The boys are currently booking some one-off summer dates to break the monotony. "Japan, South Africa, Bumfuck — we'll play anywhere," says Lars. "I'll draw the line at bar mitzvahs, but backyard keggers for sure."
As previously reported, sources close to METALLICA recently told Launch that the band will not play any U.S. shows this summer, despite speculation that the group would either headline Ozzfest or mount their own stadium tour. While METALLICA are playing three concerts in South Africa later this month and have a string of European festival appearances lined up for June, their schedule has been empty for the rest of the summer, leading to rumors of some sort of U.S. jaunt. However, the sources say that the band will enter the studio in July with producer Rick Rubin to begin recording its ninth studio album.
METALLICA will make its South African debut on March 18, March 21 and March 25 as part of a massive music festival called the Coca-Cola Colab Mix.
brain-rattling riffs ;D
