Even non-baseball fans have probably heard the biggest baseball trade rumor going around right now...Alex Rodrigez to the Red Sox, Manny Ramerez to the Rangers.
Now, I can understand that there are a lot of other parties and factors involved. The biggest one being the Red Sox sending Nomar Garciaparra and Scott Williamson to the White Sox in return for Magglio Ordonez.
Obviously, the union shot down the original deal which had been signed, sealed, and delivered between the Red Sox and the Rangers. Basically, A-Rod would be reducing his contract by about $30,000,000, and giving it to the Rangers to offset the highly over-valued Manny Ramerez. The union has strict penalties against this due to powerful teams blackmailing players out of pay, so it was a no go (same union that forces ballplayers to strike against their will for more money).
The union DID say they would allow A-Rod to reduce his contract by $12m - $13m. In response to this, the Rangers have said they would take $13m - $15m instead of their original $30m.
Red Sox and Rangers still haven't made the deal.
I'm desperately trying to figure out why? Rangers said if this isn't banged out by Tuesday then the deal is dead since everybody has a lot of work to do in the off season.
So worst case scenario as far as I can tell, Red Sox or the Rangers need to give up $3m maximum. What a clusterfuck this has turned out to be!
As far as Texas is concerned, A-Rod said he does NOT want to play for them anymore, and DOES want to play for the Red Sox. Some players on the Rangers have already come out and said that if this deal does not work, they don't see how they can possibly even play with A-Rod next year.
As far as the Red Sox are concerned, they already placed Manny on irrevocable waivers RIGHT AFTER the season ended for an entire week. You think Manny wants to come back after being thrown out like the trash? Plus, Nomar's feelings are hurt since he refuses to play anything except shortstop, and we certainly don't need a $14.5m bench warmer that hits free agency next year. Keeping both of these guys will be disasterous for the clubhouse...especially since Kevin Millar went on ESPN and said he would RATHER play with A-Rod than Manny and Nomar.
This is baseball. $3,000,000 isn't a lot of money when you're talking about one guy that makes $20,000,000/year, and another guy that makes $25,000,000/year. Take care of your business, get the media back to the sports that are actually being PLAYED right now, and shut the fuck up!
