I've been thinking about taking the plunge and getting one of these lately(they're only 80 bucks new at Best Buy). Anyone have anything positive or negative to say?

I just got my son one for his birthday. It's pretty cool. Personally, I like the Neo Geo Pocket Color more, but I'm an SNK fag like that.
The backlit screen is by far the most impressive feature on that SP. I bought one of the first models (the plain Game Boy Advanced), and unless you're playing in direct light, trying to play a game like Castlevania just downright sucks.
I'd say it's worth the investment just for Final Fantasy Tactics alone.

I actually have a Neo Geo Pocket that I got for Christmas about five years ago. The round lithium battery went out though, so I haven't been able to play it lately.
It almost seems depressing that your son's first video game experience is on a fancy schmancy SP. When I was his age, everyone strived to own one of those original Game Boys. Big and gray, green tinted screen, four AA batteries to work. Maybe I am feeling old. I shouldn't be, but you know.
But any time I pick up my Game Boy Color is nostalgia in and of itself. I remember six years ago when these things first came out. It was like heaven. I still loved my Game Boy Pocket like a dear(in fact, I still have the thing, but one of the buttons doesn't work) but COLOR! To play some good games in FULL COLOR on a Nintendo handheld system was beyond anyone's dreams at the time. And now they have this DS thing with handheld 3D. Technology that seemed mindblowing ten years ago is now available in the palm of your hand. It's pretty inconvenient to play, since there's two screens and the thing's a little wide for my hands, but it only makes you wonder where there is to go. Someday even the Gamecube could end up looking like crap. I never thought the N64 would look grainy, but as I play the thing these days, it just doesn't seem nearly as miraculous as it used to when my uncle got it right away back in 1996. Those days of playing Super Mario 64...I cherish them greatly.

Actually his first video gaming experience was on an Atari 2600. Classic 8-bit gaming goodness.

Ah, now I never had one of those.
I faintly remember owning an original Sega. I had a Genesis later on. Then I had Playstation. Then I had an N64 too. I haven't touched my Playstation in years. I've been playing my N64 lately because I only got decent games for it(Besides DK64) over the summer. Throughout the midst of all this, I owned a Game Boy Pocket/Color but the only game I haven't had to rebuy is Mario Golf. Anything I have now(Link's Awakening, Pokemon games, etc) has been rebought, meaning I've had it more than once.

The original Master System was way ahead of it's time. That was a really great machine, and even though the library paled in comparison to the NES, the ratio of good games to crap blew NES right out of the water.
The day an old friend of mine got one he gave me a call to tell me about it. I hopped on my bike and hauled ass over to his place for some hardcore Baseball and Choplifter action (mixed with a good dose of our favorite past time, prank phone calls).
EDIT: I own an N64, by the way (actually a friend of mine gave it to my son, but my son only uses it for Clayfighter). I honestly don't see what all the hub-bub is about. It doesn't excite me in the least. Then again, all I own for games are a couple wrastlin' games, a couple football games, Clayfighter, one of the Turok games, and one of the Zelda games. I'll probably grab Ogre Battle 64 if I can ever find it, but other than that, the N64 gets a big ole 'eh' from me.
I still play PS1 games on occassion. Great console even if it is heavy on the 3D shit.

Well, you're not into all the platformer crap like I am. It's not like I'm a big time gamer. I play casually.

I dig 2D platform games, but the 3D stuff has never really thrilled me. I'm more into fighting and racing games primarily, with RPG's coming in a close 3rd.

the gba sp is fucking great, i couldn't be happier with it. backlit screen, rechargable battery, compact size, good game library.
n64 sucks except for super mario 64, zelda, and goldeneye.

I didn't realize it even had a rechargable battery until last night. It blows the first model right out of the water. Now after fooling around with my son's SP for a little bit, I'm seriously considering retiring my old one and getting the new model.
What are the new DS models running for, like $200 or something? That just doesn't seem like it's worth the money, in all honesty.

i don't care about the DS at all, i haven't read anything about it and don't plan on ever owning one. i got my first SP real cheap used at a record store and since then traded up to the NES edition through some wheeling and dealing. i love it and it's totally all i need in terms of portable gaming unless i get something for free basically.
i also have a game gear with the master gear converter though.

n64 sucks except for super mario 64, zelda, and goldeneye. Oh come on. Starfox, Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing, Mario Golf and Tennis, Donkey Kong, etc... Oh maybe I just suck like that. That is actually one of the main reasons I want to get an SP(the NES and SNES games on it)...I mean hell, I could be sitting there in school, nobody's looking...time for some Metroid. Yeah.

Sure enough, I did take this plunge. I got a used one today with Metroid(the NES one). I'm so glad I can save on this one.
I'll be sure to get other games later, but I feel like I've been throwing my money away lately.

You know, there was a little talk of the DS in this thread, so I thought I'd bring that up.
A couple of my friends both got DS at the same time and I've played Metroid Prime and Super Mario DS on them. I have to say, even though the touch screen thing was a bitch, I was impressed. I'm considering getting one when the price goes down(because I'm not paying $150 for one, that's for sure).

The DS releases down here on the 24th. Nintendo have like a 5% Console Market share down here so it's funny to see guys in department stores pushing the thing down everyone's throats. I spent about 2 minutes with one before giving up. Played Mario 64 DS. The touch screen really is a bitch, and controlling with the d-pad was even worse. I'm guessing Mario 64 DS isn't the best thing to be demoing to those who're gonna spend a whole 2 minutes fiddling with the thing.
I'll probably get one at some point purely because I'm a fucking game geek and the system has some real potential for innovation. But yeah, wasn't impressed.

Swag, you should check out the forums at Stage Select. It's a small community, but it's good. I've been posting over there for about a year or so.

Hmm, so that's the forum where you met Scoots...
I was browsing it. As I expected, I didn't find anything I wanted to reply to, but you know. Seems like a decent enough community.

the forums are really dead over there lately. there's a lot of good info in the databases though. i uploaded scans of like 400 NES carts, as well as almost 500 other pics.

Yeah, the db over there is wicked cool. For everything you do over there from posting in the forums to adding a complete FAQ to the database you get points in doing so. It's basically a big glorified game honoring games.

I pop in and out of a forum that has a rep system. It's the stupidest fucking thing I've ever seen. The same morons just give each other good rep over and over again. I have some rep points...but not nearly as much as some of the ridiculous amounts I've seen.
It doesn't help that almost everyone who posts there is borderline retarded. I was actually there today. Just as I thought, nothing has changed. I made a few posts in various places making fun of everyone, and then left.
