Or is science fiction getting really crappy lately? Fantasy seems to be taking off again, and though I do enjoy the occasional romp with hot elf bitches and such, I need my alien invasions and exploding planets!
Case in point- one of my favorite authors, David Drake, has been doing an OK kinda space opera thingy (the Lt Leary series) simultaneous to an OK fantasy series (the Lord of the Isles series). While I do enjoy reading his stuff, I need more military scifi! Where the hell has it all gone?!? And I don't mean space opera poo, I want gritty, bleeding on an alien planet, perpetrating a warcrime kinda stories.

i don't really read any "new" authors/books in either field, but i've always preferred swords and sorcery to sci-fi.

I'm practically a moron when it comes to sci-fi, but the thought of hardcore alien warstories in vein of Starship Troopers is pretty cool. Even though I have a stack of lit I'm working on right now, would you care to rattle off a few essentials?

Look at the Hammers Slammers series by David Drake. Yes, the name is kinda gay, but the stories are COOL. SM Sterling's War World series and Man-Kzin War series are cool. William Dietz's Legion series is pretty good. And those should tide you over for a few months.

Thanks, bro. And Hammers Slammers sounds like a cool name to me. Mainly because large hammers are probably the coolest of all blunt weapons.

The series involves tanks, bloodshed and warcrimes. All pretty cool. And Drake has been doing the series since like the mid-70s.

I've never been impressed with Heinlein. Yeah, yeah, god of the sci-fi world and all that crap, but his high horse moral positions have left me with a bad taste in my mouth. If I want to be preached to, I'll read a Bible.
