I didn't think this discussion belonged in the General Discussion forum since RPG's tend to go hand in hand with hobby/comic shops. None the less, I was curious if there were any Warhammer 40K players around. I used to fool around with it quote a few years back, but gave up on the whole pen & paper thing entirely. Anyway, I was debating on picking up The Battle For Macragge just to get back into it. Anybody played this or other Warhammer 40K games?

never played 40K, but warhammer fantasy roleplay was the jam back in like 8th grade. probably the coolest rpg system in my opinion. we didnt' get into 40K mainly because of all the miniatures needed i guess (even though i always really enjoyed painting them). we actually started playing warhammer again a year or so ago but the guy running the game moved away and it's impossible to find other people to game with.
other faves: teenage mutant ninja turtles rpg (palladium): got this in the 6th grade (pre cartoon turtles for those not in the know), it was the first rpg i ever played. my friends and i had a ton of fun with this for quite awhile. call of cthulhu (chaosium): hp lovecraft rpg, what more needs to be said? the gm was another huge mark for hpl so he ran some great scenarios. we played this one a lot too. i still remember my character, rex dexter, private investigator. haha. also owned at various times: top secret, cyberpunk, batman rpg, marvel superheroes, ad&d, etc. i currently still own warhammer, call of cthulhu, elric, ad&d, star frontiers, and some other games, but more because i just enjoy geeking out and thumbing through the books when i can find them cheap at the salvation army. i'd love to get a serious campaign going but obviously, adults who can get seriously into pen and paper rpgs are almost exclusively social fuckups and retards.

adults who can get seriously into pen and paper rpgs are almost exclusively social fuckups and retards. That's my main problem with pen & paper RPG's. It's so hard to simply find a casual gamer. There is a hobby shop close to here that will host RPG's, but they attract the filthiest array of geeks and nerds. Plus they stink up the entire fucking store. What I dig about this 40K box is the fact it comes with all the figures included. Only plastic, but after a good painting it's tough to tell the difference. Also, never played the original Warhammer. I like 40K's gruesome future of hulking warmachines and firepower.

warhammer frp is actually really awesome, cause it's like got the d&d monsters and wizards kinda stuff, but it's also totally grim and pretty realistic otherwise. the entire game world is based on a pseudo-historic version of europe, so the names and shit all have an air of authenticity around them, unlike the totally made-up d&d style stuff. the concept of law vs chaos is heavily indebted to micheal moorcock's writing (which i love) so tht is just another added layer of coolness for me.

You make it sound interesting, but ultimately I'm bored to tears with swords and sorcery. Granted, the whole sci-fi thing doesn't do much for me, either, but Warhammer 40K carries with it tons of charm.
Back when I would play, I used to be most interested in games like Car Wars and Twilight 2000, while my RPG-ing buddies would be into the classics like D&D and Spelljammer.
