It's a classic, but I just got it on DVD. Rumor has it they're going to be re-releasing this thing as a special edition, but who knows when that's going to be. Can't wait till it gets here, though. The only special features on the Goodfellas DVD is a couple of trailers. On top of that, it's a flipper DVD. So basically, if you have this on Laserdisc, no need to buy it on DVD.
Onwards! Godfather vs. Goodfellas debate? Going to have to go with Goodfellas. Always have, always will. Instead of making this great big romantic story about the mafia like in the Godfather, Goodfellas rolls up it's sleeves, spits on it's hands, and gets down to the nitty gritty shit. Never being a member of the mafia personally, I couldn't say which way is more acuate. Because of this, I'll choose the way which is personally more entertaining.
Since we're on the subject of entertaining, Ray Liotta (Henry Hill) is not. I don't know what the hype about this guy is. His role in the movie is incredibly one dimensional, not requiring a large acting stretch on his part. I mean, even Jeff Goldblum could have played this role. Good thing for him since he's up against the likes of Robert DeNiro (Jimmy Conway), Joe Pesci (Tommy DeVito), and Paul Sorvino (Paul Cicero). The three of them are highly dimensional and likeable characters regardless of their nasty ways. Ray Liotta is not. The only thing this guy has done which is worth his weight in salt was Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. He has his moments in Goodfellas where he almost shows a bit of charm, but for the most part his character seems to be a lost cause. Granted, I never read the book this movie was based on: Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi...so it could be he played this role to a "T". Regardless, Goodfellas is without a doubt the pinnacle of Ray's acting career.
Joe Pesci does a phenominal job. The guy should definitely stick to psycho gangster roles like Goodfellas and Casino instead of horseshit like Home Alone and 8 Heads In A Duffle Bag. Pesci doing comedy is the equivalent of buying the most expensive steak at the meat house only to bring it home, grind it up for hamburg, and drown it in A1 Sauce.
Another surprise was Lorraine Bracco as Karen Hill. Unfortunately, the way her character was written she comes across as a nagging, money hungry jew...but what the hell, she played the role very well.
So anyway, there's a sea of gangster movies out there. The majority of these things are pretty pathetic, so save yourself some boredom and stick to what works. Goodfellas is as good as it gets.
Grade: A+
