Guess I'll be the first one to review an album like this...
I'm guessing there's gonna be a few people who are unfamiluar with Led Zeppelin and their line up so...
Jimmy Page- guitars
Robert Plant- vocals, harmonica
John Paul Jones- bass, keyboards
John Bonham- drums
I was out with some friends once getting a slice of pizza and we managed to find our way into an argument about heavy metal and it's origins. While we we're eating one of my friends proceeded to say "Dude how can you even talk about metal like you know what it is, you're wearing a Led Zeppelin shirt."
This was and continues to be the stupidest thing I have ever heard (even the guy wearing the Gorgoroth shirt shook his head in reflected embarassment), and this album is, to me, the greatest example of Led Zeppelin being a significant part of metal's roots (they actually came out a year earlier then Black Sabbath, but I won't even go near that argument)
+A Achilles Last Stand- Probably their longest song, but also one of their fastest (somehow). Jones plugs away on muted strings at a regular clip and John Bonham beats the hell out of his kit like only he could, meanwhile, Plant wails about god only knows what but I can tell you it has nothing to do with the Greek. At 8:25 Page unleashes the "guitar army" they just don't play it like this anymore.
B For Your Life- A lumbering little number till around the 2 minute mark. This song features the priceless opening line "You said I was the only, With my lemon in your hand" and another solo like you'll never hear played again, but aw hell Page always serves it up that way.
A Royal Orleans- Catchy and short. He found a great riff, used it, and cut it off before it could become redundant. Something NOBODY DOES ANYMORE *tears out some of his hair*
B Nobody's Fault but Mine- Usually I really do know what Plant is talking about, honestly. This song is an exception. Thank god he stops rambling and pulls out the harmonica (Wow, no one will ever hear someone say that again.) The strangest part of the song is the pause that fools you into thinking it's over... And then Plant cries out "Got a monkey on my back!" Heroine really is a hell of a drug.
C Candy Store Rock- oh baby, baby, he sounds like Elvis. Actually he sounds like horny, forceful, nasaly Elvis. It aint bad for a satire but if they were being serious...
+B Hot on for Nowhere- For some reason, every now and again Plant sounds like David Lee Roth on this one. Or maybe I'm crazy? I don't headbang but I have to admit I do nod my head to this one.
+A Tea For One- Another epic, and probably my second favorite song on the album even though this one really, really, really does D R A G. Seriously, Most pure running fans of speed and thrash metal will hate this. But I can't get enough. Plant seems to have sobered up at last, singing about something anyone could understand. And the song features a "surprise solo" at one of the most low key moments that serves well to carry through the whole thing. It's very bluesy and is mostly just Page showcasing his virtuoso skill, if that's your cup of tea (pardon the incredibly lame pun, I couldn't resist)
