Ronny Cox 'Ronny Cox'
1993, Columbia
Ronny Cox, you all know him right? The legendary Q list actor famous for his roles in Deliverance, Robocop and Raw Courage? Well such was Ronny's fame that he was able to record a solo album in 1993, a country music affair with less charm than 'Cryptic Writings'. I bought this for a dollar, simply in the hope of some AOR, but was instead faced with Ronny gunslinging his way through tales of the wild west and love on the rocks and the death of Z grade director John Huston. 'Is this Gonna Hurt' again is Cox's violin heavy ode to doing time in the big house in Leavenworth, while 'Santa Ana Winds' sadly isn't a Survivor cover. 'Milkbone Underwear' sees Ronny beamoaning his life, 'it's a dog eat dog world out there and it seems like I'm wearing milkbone underwear!' 'Grady' meanwhile is an old timer who used to molest Ronny when he was a kid. But Ronny loved the old guy and he sadly recounts Grady's death by drowning in a pool saving a little girl. Grady never learnt to swim. In the liner notes Ronny says 'if this album succeeds it's all of your fault'. I guess he had nothing to worry about then. Ronny Cox 1921-2003 RIP.
