Being a person who doesnt play any musical instrument I am easily impressed with flashy playing and showman ship, but I appreciate more, artists who give importance to good songwriting, rhythm and harmony. That is why maybe I like listening to Joe Satriani very much. Im not going to talk much about his legatos or arpeggios or his finger tapping technique because frankly I don’t know shit about those. So if you find anything wrong about my review, blame it on my ignorance
Surfing with an alien - his debut album (I think). It has Silver Surfer on the cover giving his intergalactic seal of approval. Listening to it at present, all songs sound as if they really came from the 80’s . Songs like Always with you always with me, Circles and Lords of Karma make this a good listen for me. To summarize this album I think its listening to it while your inside your jeep while speeding towards your death. Or background music to real TV
The Extremist – Still a good pretty well rounded Satriani album. Highlights for me are the songs War, Friends (wich is a good song to play when in a reunion), track 5 and Why
Motorcycle Driver gets heavy rotation at Z rock
Joe Satriani (self titled) – Joe reveled blues on this one. Maybe he was taking valium on this stage of his life. The whole album is slow except for killer be bop. I think the whole album cover sums of the mood, we see Joe looking down looking sad as maybe his favorite guitar died.
Crystal Planet – It’s the first time I see Joe bald. Maybe he got mad after loosing all his hair and wrote more edgy songs. I think this is my favorite of all his albums. Each song flows effortlessly to the next. You gotta listen to the carrier song Crystal Planet. The song progresses quickly then ends dramatically. Train of angels and Prayer are also good tracks. Id sum this album as riff of riffic.
Engines of Creation – a lot of fans were caught of guard if not alienated with this one. If Im not mistaken, Joe got abducted by aliens who performed an anal probe on his, uh anus, got inspired by all of it, then he decided to make the album sound spacey. At times, you’d think it’s a keyboard playing instead of a guitar. Still a good album though and succeeded on whatever its concept may be.
Strange and Beautiful Music – The latest I have of his. I would compare this as a mix of his self titled album mixed with Crystal Planet with moods from Engines of creation. He covers the song sleepwalk which was a good rendition. I wouldn’t cite any outstanding track as I feel the whole album is really well even out.
So there, I could’ve included G3 as well but its just hearing s3 of his song live. But the plus of it is if you’re a fan of Steve Vai and Eric Johnson their in there too.
