OBITUARY bassist Frank Watkins recently spoke to Decibel magazine about the songwriting process for the group's new studio album, tentatively due in 2005 through an as-yet-undetermined label (most likely Roadrunner). Watkins described the group's new material as "Going towards more of our older style, more like the 'Slowly We Rot' or 'Cause of Death' era; we're not really going to experiment like we did on past albums. We're trying to make this album as brutal as we possible can, we're going to try to make it the heaviest album we've ever recorded."
With regards to how the legendary death metal band's reunion came about, Watkins said that ANDREW W.K. (whose band features OBITUARY drummer Donald "D.T." Tardy) was playing Ozzfest in 2002, "He asked me and John [Tardy, OBITUARY vocalist] if we'd get up with them and do a song, so we did it, and then just from there it kind of sparked more interest in all of us to get back together, so we called everybody and it took about a year and a half, and we just said, 'We should start doing it again.'"
One of the last bands I would want to get back together is Obituary. World Demise was unacceptable, and they kept going downhill from there. If these guys are talking about a return to the likes of "Cause Of Death" and "Slowly We Rot", then I can't help but look forward to this.
Wow. Seems kind of strange. I'm going to say something I never thought I would ever say again...I'm looking forward to the new Obituary album.
