this is essentially how i feel too. genres/styles don't just spring up in a vacuum, it's all built upon something earlier. i think it's useful to try to discern a genres most essential elements, but it's also real easy to lose your way and start looking too far afield to really be relevant.
also, i'll be on the look out for gun, not familiar with them.

My favorite study is the Demo/tape trading years. I have some old tapes like Death and Necrophagia and Voivod demos. A cool flyer promoting Death's demo. Collecting old shit like that back then was a lot of fun.
