i fail to see your point horatio. "just for the record" my record collection contains dozens of albums by van halen, motley crue, ratt, the who, and other aor/hard rock bands. i'm well acquainted with bands like montrose, gamma, sweet, ufo, etc. i don't automatically equate "heavier" with "better." it doesn't change the fact that the who were not particularly heavy (or good) in my opinion. "dazed and confused" is heavier than anything the who ever recorded and i would still balk at calling zep "metal."

simply staggering that a person could be a reviewer of rock/metal and conjure up such an outlandish line.

far be it for me to pontificate about who was the first metal band or whatever the fuk this thread is about but i dont believe anyone with a true knowledge of hard rock and metal would fail to recognise the intrinsic importance of the who in the overall progression of rock and metal in the late 60's and early 70's.

its common knowledge that the who were a totally different animal to the studio recordings they produced.

and it is in this domain that all bands from blue cheer through to deep purple and black sabbath were influenced.
