i stand by what i said and i don't think that in any way is me "sticking up for VW" if that's how you're taking it. i'm sure they are built a lot worse now in the past, but ultimately i don't care. i'm not a vw (company) fanboy, i just love the cars i have. i have no interest in any of the cars they make now and will probably never own one.

I agree with scoots' comment about competent people owning them having fewer problems... I also agree with hellbent's statement about them going downhill. I've owned many pre-93 VW's and audi's, and have been able to fix 99% of the problems I've encountered in a few hours time, very inexpensively. The never ones though (for instance, my 95 audi 90Q) can be a PITA, and expensive as all hell. I feel that you're both right in your statements.

my bug is going to be a lot better than it was when it was new when i'm done with it. i put the narrowed axle beam in this week and will probably get the disc brake kit hooked up this weekend. my good bud just bought a '59 beetle yesterday and we're going to an all vw show in ct on sunday. GOOD TIMES YOU NEGATIVE NANCIES.

My car is a Passat. Besides the computer that beeps at me every time I start the car, I have no problems with it. Good gas mileage, runs like a champ. But what do I know, I've had my license for just over a month.

I heard VW's dont have handbrakes, instead you have to put it in gear to prevent rolling while parked. Is that correct?

In a sense it is... they do have handbrakes, but they RARELY work well enough to trust them

I have a handbrake, but I also drive a standard so it's kind of a necessity.

We currently have a Passat GLS at the dealership with a 5-speed manual teamed with the 1.8L turbo engine. Not much to look at, but she screams.

Lamp, I was specifically talking about the older generation VWs... I should *hope* their e-brakes work NOW Shev, those 1.8t's are great motors. Super easy, and super cheap to tune. My friend owned an 2003 20th Anniversary GTi with one of those motors in it, and when he was done with it... wow

One of those little Golfs? Those cars are fucking nuts. If I have to make thunder run somewhere at work, I always take a Golf if we have a used one in-stock. They're fast, have great vision all around the car, handle great, and a retard could parallel park one in downtown traffic. On top of that, they're small but still comfortable inside.

*update* i got most of the front end done this weekend. 2" narrowed adjustable axle beam, 2.5" dropped spindles, disc brake kit with stainless steel braided hoses, 3/4" sway bar, new kyb shocks, urethane bushings all around. everything went pretty smooth and i fucking love the way this car sits now.
