'64 beetle, working on it all weekend. total ground up resto, i've still got a ways (translation: $$$) to go, but i'm pretty happy with how it's shaping up.

Not a bad looking resto so far. Is that the final paint color? And... uh... why restore a Beetle? Why not a nice car? Was the '64 a 1300? Are you going stock on the engine?

what isn't "nice" about a beetle? they look awesome, are fun to drive, easy to work on, cheap (comparitively) and plentiful parts, lots of performance options etc
that is the final color (L472 Panama Beige, a '64-only color). it has a rebuilt 40hp motor, but obviously i'm getting rid of that and building a bigger engine etc

we just got the thing inspected for the first time since '86 this weekend. we'll replace the convertible top this summer probably, but that should be it for awhile. i guess we'll agree to disagree on the other points.

Hey, if a flower vase being standard equipment is your idea of an awesome car, I'm cool with that. Just giving you shit, Scoots. Who loves ya, baby?

The 0-60 time on that car out of the factory is longer than the quarter mile time.
It's still fun to drive if you like snap oversteer and rollovers. Which I do. But Ralph Nader would have a heart attack over that rear suspension. Did you paint it yourself? It looks like a good job, and the panel fit looks clean, but the photo's not good enough to tell. My advice on the engine? Garrett T66. Ball-bearing turbo the size of a dinner plate.

aw yeah, i just got three big boxes of parts delivered to my work... front disc brake conversion, stainless steel braided brake hoses, a narrowed adjustable axle beam (will allow wider tires and lowers front end up to 3"), dropped spindles (2.5" front end drop, maintains stock steering geometry), keyed alike door handles, etc etc etc
PSYCHED
can't fuckin wait to get home now

I just bought a 1958 Norton Jubilee. OK, it's a motorcycle, not a car, but it's pretty rad anyway. It's a basket case, so I'm picking up about 4 cardboard boxes of parts tomorrow afternoon. Then I get to build it. I can't wait.
What is the front suspension setup on old beetles? Struts?

'58 norton that sounds rad. i definitely want to build an older bike up one day.
older beetle have shocks. torsion springs through the axle beam connect to torsion bars which is where the spindles attach to the brake drums (or discs). pretty simple setup, easy to work on.

And now they're expensive and poorly built. I wish Hitler's grandkids didn't take a vow to not reproduce, because we really need another Hitler to bring VW out of the gutter.

who cares about "now", that car is 41 years old.
ps the new jettas are the ugliest shit ever, but i love my 91 and even my 98 has never needed anything more than a starter and a battery since i've owned it. vws should only be sold to people who know how to take care of their cars, you'd hear a lot fewer stories about "problems" with them...

Meaning sell them to anal people that pussy-foot around quality issues? I suppose that's one solution.
Another might be to actually build them like they used to. The only new vehicle on the road with worse quality than a VW is a Hummer. That's worse than Scion, Saturn, Kia, etc. Face it, bro. It doesn't matter who buys a VW these days. They're junk.
