en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo#Nintendo_64" In September 1996, Nintendo introduced their third console, the Nintendo 64 (N64), which featured vastly improved three dimensional graphics and a new analog stick. Nintendo chose to remain with the cartridge medium, a surprising move, especially considering their competition's choice of emerging CD-ROM storage mediums. This may have affected the amount of games published on the Nintendo 64; CD-ROMs are cheaper to produce than cartridges, meaning cheaper costs for the third party publishers — since Nintendo did not choose to use CD-ROMs, publishers would be more swayed to publish for Sony's PlayStation, which did use CD-ROMs. This was also rumored to be the subject of Squaresoft (now Square Enix) not developing anymore games for Nintendo and starting to release their games for the Sony PlayStation, and then the PlayStation 2.
Nintendo used the code names Project Reality and Ultra 64 prior to the systems actual release, and these names are still used by some people. Nintendo also touted new "innovative" and "groundbreaking" elements of the Nintendo 64 — such as its four controller ports, an analog stick, and a 64-bit processor — although these might not be considered "groundbreaking" as most had been done before.
The first 3D Mario game was introduced on the N64 as Super Mario 64, which has been the archetype for almost all 3D console games to this day. Other popular games were GoldenEye 007, which ushered in a new era for console first-person shooter games, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time." It came out in '96. I was working at a movie store at the time, and clearly remember people practically fighting to rent one.

Hmm.
Well, let's see what I liked about it. I'm not saying it's my favorite system because of its library or because of the confusing controller or whatever. But the games I do remember tearing the crap out of are the ones that I have the memories with and to this day are still not old to me. I have some shit in here I'd rather not own like Lego Racers and Pokemon Snap, but the five games I constantly have sitting in my play pile...Super Mario 64, Mario Kart, Mario Golf, Waverace, and Super Smash Bros....I've been playing some of these games for years and years and they still haven't gotten old to me. DK64 was also a great game to me. Starfox, Ocarina of Time(not Majora's Mask though)...
Perhaps this opinion is just based on what's entertaining me now.

n64 came out at a time in my life when i couldn't care less about video games (sophomore year of college). one of my suite mates got one for christmas and when i saw mario 64 i nearly fell on the floor it was so awesome. i got one of my own like a year later and loved the hell out of it. since then however i don't think i've ever gotten the urge to go back and play mario 64 again the way i have with smb for nes for instance, or even super mario world for snes. there were a handful of really really great games (mario 64, goldeneye, ocarina, tony hawk, the thq wrestling game) but overall the library was absolutely horrible. the fact that it was nintendo's first true 3d system (basically) meant that developers would trot out every bad idea they could and just slap some 3d flash on it to sell. i didn't mind the controller at all, just the fact that this overpriced piece of shit had only a half dozen games worth replaying on it. might not even be in my top 10 favorite systems.

yeah N64 is so shitty. A few classics but, overall it's pretty gay. Most N64 games are hardly playable.

Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Super Smash Bros, Donkey Kong 64, Starfox 64...I could keep going and thus far I've only mentioned 1st and 2nd party titles. The N64 had a plethora of top quality titles, and plenty that are worthy of repeated play throughs (it should be noted though that todays games mostly aim for a single-play through offering with mere collectables and shit to entice you to play again). Comparing SM64 to the original Mario Bros. in terms of replayability isn't really a fair comparison, gaming had changed since the 8-bit days. Mario Bros was designed to be rather short but also be played again and again, with the limitations of the hardware, it was the best way to make a good game. To expect that kind of replayability out of a game (and games) that comes from a time where games are designed to leave a lasting impact rather than a short-term impact that is revisited doesn't present an accurate representation of worth.
But still, it sounds like you're definitely a Retro gamer, thus games like Mario Bros. fit more into what you're looking for.
I believe the N64 is one of the greatest systems ever, it pioneered on several fronts in the console market - as did its games. And in terms of its software offering, it beats out the Gamecube as far as home Nintendo systems go.
Also, if you're after modern replayability pick up a Gameboy Advance SP and Warioware Twisted, now that's replayability.

Got Diddy Kong Racing and Chameleon Twist for N64 the other day. Both great. Been playing DKR the most...my second day with the game and I already beat the final boss. The first time anyway...
I guess it's not as hard as when I was a kid, heh.

Now Pwning: Castlevania: Aria of Sorrows for GBASP! Sweetness.. Next: Metroid Fusion Brilliant choices, man. Two of the finest games in two very similar series. If only MF was a bit longer... I've been hammering Halo 2 over the past few weeks, just when I think I'm over it, I get right back into it again - easily one of my favourite games ever.
